Life Orientation seeks to provide learners with opportunities to make informed choices pertaining to personal and environment health. It also develops beneficial social interactions, such as respecting the rights and values of our fellow man. It furthermore develops self-image, teaches self-motivation and how to apply goal - setting strategies.
It also offers opportunities to participate in a variety of meaningful vigorous physical activities offered in a well-planned physical education programme.
In the Senior Phase (Grades 7 – 9) this learning area adds an outcome which offers learners to develop to their full potential, by making informed choices with regard to their chosen career fields, developing their interests and abilities, planning future careers and study opportunities.
As a compass leads a traveler to find his/her way to a chosen destination, this compulsory Learning Area – Life Orientation - endeavours to lead learners to use their skills and their talents to reach their full potential. They are being prepared to continue with this subject into Grade 10 as it outlines a plan for their own lifelong learning.
Further information and policies is provided on the web page.
Careers Dress-Up Day “Are you in grade 7 or a grade 7 teacher? Are you preparing for “Career Dress Up Day” - which will be held on 8th October 2008?
In recognition of the necessity for learners to give careful and realistic consideration to their dreams and choice of a career, the Department of Education is proposing, together with the PACE Career Centre, that Grade 7 learners be given an opportunity to consider career possibilities as they complete their primary schooling and prepare to enter secondary school.
The concept of a “career dress-up” day is supported by the requirements of the Life Orientation curriculum in Grade 7 that requires that learners be able to make informed decisions about further study and career choices. The concept of a “Career Dress-up” Day would allow Life Orientation teachers to develop a lesson plan to address this outcome that would culminate on 8 October 2008 when learners would wear clothing / hats or any other symbolic item that would represent the career of their choice. This would undoubtedly see learners and their parents engage in discussions about their career choices. Guidelines to assist Life Orientation teachers have been developed and include an exemplar of a lesson plan that gives more detailed information about implementing a “Career Dress-up Day”.
Find herewith attached the example of a lesson plan as well as notes to the teacher for preparation of this day. This lesson should be introduced to Grade 7 – learners by the first week in September so that they can prepare them for this event. The PACE career centre has included the following competition to this project. You will get more information with regard to this with the posters that will be forwarded to your office:
- Learners to write a 300-word essay on the career they want to follow
- These essays to be handed in on 23rd September
- Best essay per school must be faxed to PACE Career Centre (Tel 0113881447)
- Top ten essays will earn career resources for their schools
- The top 3 essays will be awarded R1000 towards further studies
Should the initiate prove successful consideration will be given to establishing this as an annual event. Schools are encouraged to take photos or videos on this day. Let us all encourage our learners and guide them to make informed decisions with regard their career choices.
